New York Fashion Week and all of its glamorous evening parties kicked off September 4th and while the shows are still ongoing, there is a trend that’s already taken over the runways – the 60’s. For beauty, cat eye makeup, big pastel lids, and side parted hair flooded this week’s shows. On the runway, this season’s colorful geometric patterns and big collars from Coach and Victoria Beckham to Derek Lam’s golden ankle boots (Love!) and Thakoon’s platform heels brought back the age of Twiggy and Bardot. Flared pants almost out numbered skinnies, and muted earth-toned pastels were accompanied by bright pinks and salmons. We’ll be bringing you more trend reports as fashion week goes on but for now, let’s take a look into the golden age.
A note about trends:
When we’re talking about Fashion Week trends, I frequently get the question of how to apply trend reports that are for seasons a year out. If we look at Fashion as a wearable art form and art trends and styles vary through the years, we can look at fashion the same way. Last season’s pieces were seen as street wear in those attending this season’s shows. Trends don’t just last a few months, although for some trends we wish it would. We can look at them as a reflection of art and culture, and even if we don’t partake, we can train our eyes to appreciate what’s to come. And for those catching the last of the summer sales, at least you’ll know what to pick up and store for next year.
