Some distant time ago, I posted an announcement on our Instagram that I would be sharing my take on nutrition principles outlined in the Perricone Diet, which is also comically known as the Perricone Face Lift Diet. Created by Dr. Nicholas Perricone, MD (who has built a nifty skincare and nutrition empire from these principles over the past decade), the diet promises weight loss results as well as beautiful skin. Sounds like a win-win situation, doesn’t it?
In a nutshell, Dr. Perricone asserts that an “anti-inflammatory” diet not only aids in overall health, it eliminates puffiness and aids in firming contours of the face. Read more about the scientific claims behind Perricone’s principles here.
Fish oil and vegetables are the main stars of the diet. Salmon, chia seeds, blueberries, fungi (snow fungus mushroom in particular) and almonds are just some of the food items featured. Coffee, alcohol, dairy and pretty much all carbs are banned. Sugar is public enemy number 1, Perricone argues that sweets not only rot our teeth and our insides, they rot our skin. The only type of caffeine permitted is in the form of green tea, which the good doctor recommends drinking by the bucket on a daily basis pretty much.

Gotta have coffee, ya know what I mean?

OK, I don’t know about the rest of you but none of us here at NoFilter could go half a day without two things: coffee and carbs. We also enjoy our happy hours and ice cream with our OnDemand movies, thank you very much. Cutting out anything with flour and sugar for every meal is also highly impractial for us as well.
So, I’m going to set out to tailor the Perricone Diet for everyday consumption with recipes that can be incorporated into regular meal routines with the aim of eating healthier overall on a longer term basis, as opposed to following the Diet for a 3 day purge and then going back to eating shortbread cookies for breakfast. Most of the recipes that I will be sharing over the next while will involve minimal prep work and be easy to throw together for a weekday meal. Because, face it, healthy eating is a cross country road trip, not a quarter mile drag race. I’ll also be discussing more of my own thoughts, as a regular jane, on some of the nutritional claims that Dr. Perricone makes.
